Dathorn.com

Dathorn has suspended my account due to "excessive system resource usage due to large quantities of MySQL traffic." Well I had one visitor at that time and I was at that same time I was adding a Categories into my "Freshly" installed directory. The software I was using is Joomla with a directory component (http://www.mosets.com/) At the time I was adding categories into my directory when i got a Joomla message with a number 2, this message indicated that joomla cannot connect to the Mysql, moments later the message was gone and moments later again I see the message"This Account Has Been Suspended Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible." So, I contacted the Dathorn support and moments later he responded telling me why. Since's I been having alot of problems getting my websites going with Dathorn in the past 3 months, I figured this is the fine time to end the relationship and wish to moved on to a different host. So within moments after Dathorn responded I submitted a cancellation ticket and after awhile he did not responded ignoring the "Cancellation part" I suppose. I then created another ticket wanting a confirmation. No respond. The next billing cycle is tommorow, is Dathorn waiting for tommorow to come so that he could bill me for the month of June? I don't know, but I think at this point he is not responding to a cancelllation. i really dont care about why was the reason about my moving away from this trouble host, at this point I dont want to explain it, I just want to move on and hoopefully not be billed for next month, because this host has it's last call from me. In total time I been with this host...Nearly 3 years dating back from April of 2003. All of the website I had on his server where never really anyhting that I could call a website, mainly for testing purposes, I basically use it to play things around. In the past 3 months I been developing one domain and I been promoting it and at one point I got 75 visitor at one time, that was last month. But to make it short. The site has been averaging about 30 unique visitors since March. As I said I wont go any further except..... Dathorn cancel my account!!! I'm done with you.

Dathorn is a good company. Did you explain to him your side? Sorry to hear about your experience. If your site is really using that excessive resoures then nothing you can do.

A php script without anyone visiting it can cause high resource usage You may want to work with your host on this one.

I guess you did not read their TOS or cancellation policy. And I am not sure if coming to WHT just for account cancellation will be of help because this is something between you and your host. As long as you followed the process stated in their terms and did not breach AUP, you should not worry at all.

You'll need to contact their billing department and request your account be cancelled.

As I mention on my first post that I did contacted Dathorn about cancellation 3 times on the same ticket within a 4 to 5 hour in time. He had just replied to my ticket about the suspension. I replied back with a new ticket to cancel my account. No reply. Hours went by still no reply. I came here to post this. 3 to 4 hours later my account was cancelled. I'm happy The reason that i needed to cancel so that i can move to a new host and get the domain propagated, FTP my files and hope to have my site running tommorow or whenever the domain propagated. and besides the next billing is on June 1st and i dont want my site to spend another day on that server or company. I got a new host. Let me tell you. I uploaded Joomla and my FTP did not Timed-Out. With Dathorn that would have been over 8 hours to manually upload Joomla, trust me i've done that many times. Anything over larger than 2mb the FTP timed-out if i'm out having a smoke I would have to logged back in on my ftp and check the files on the folder to make sure some files are there, in which in many cases I need to upload it. It's amazing that I can drop an entire folder on my FTP and go watch tv and by the time I come back ALL FILES ARE THERE!!! AMAZING!!! I had always thought that it was my FTP software that did that, then I tried using the FireFox FireFTP and the other FTP Programs it did the samething, times out on me. Which meant I have to be there watching the files upload and I can't browse the web either or I would wind up login back in in my FTP. It's a TASK! Also I am free with the Dathorn "support" which I din't use much maybe less than 10 to 15 tickets in almost 3 years of being with that company. 4-2003 cancelled around 5-2005? Then went back in late Feb of 2006 ends 5-31-2006(amen)

until couple of days ago (I cannot check right now), dathorn had Joomla v1.0.7 available in the automated cgi script library. According to joomla.org (26 June 2006): "All existing Joomla! users MUST UPGRADE to this version, due to several High Level vulnerabilities that affect ALL Previous versions of Joomla! 1.0.10 contains the following important security fixes: 03 High Level Security Fixes 01 Medium Level Security Fixes 05 Low Level security 40+ General bug fixes If you are using ANY previous version of Joomla!, you need to upgrade to 1.0.10" So any non technicaly oriented customer of any dathorn's reseller installing joomla from cgi script library is risking of having his domain suspended without realising why! is this a common practice among the good hosting companies?

by the way kato5 can you share with us your new host?

I don't think it's too irrational to think that someone who can install Joomla can also upgrade it.

someone who will install joomla from fantastico or any other automated system will do that at a touch of a button. - someone who will configure joomla will do that through a simple gui that requires no technical expertise. - fantastico gives you the option to upgrade the script to the most "recent" version. - it is irrational to allow end customers to "upgrade" their script to a version couple of months old!

Regarding cancellations, these tickets are not given priority over other technical support tickets. As long as a ticket is received by 12:01AM CST on the 1st of the month, your cancellation is guaranteed to be processed without any further charges. rouho, you've already made your very same point in a couple of other threads. As I have explained before, and will do so yet again: Several of our older servers utilize the CPSkins.com auto-installers. As it turns out, we were not pleased with these at all and merely chose to use them until the licenses expired. Most of these servers do not even allow users to install the scripts any more, your server was one exception. All of our newer servers utilize Fantastico which is updated much more frequently, contains far fewer bugs, etc. As a matter of fact, your account is on a server that was just upgraded today, which includes Fantastico and the latest version of Joomla.

Most of the issue of late with security and Joomla, as well as CPU usage relate to 3rd party scripts. mtree for one has an recent update out. Many 3rd party 'stats' components for Joomla are also very mysql intensive. Also, when upgrading Joomla, PLEASE ensure you use the latest htaccess file (rename htaccess.txt in Joomla distro). Joomla 1.0.8 and below htaccess.txt file was not very friendly to servers... .. and while we are at it, all hosts should now be on php 4.4.3 for security reasons. Having register_globals disabled is also a VERY good idea. So is mod_security and a host of other security measures. Education people, we all have a responsibility to educate our clients/users! Script security is just one part of that.
