I'm not surprised at all. That is why you should limit what information you place on FB and limit who you accept as a friend.

It's their problem for accepting random people as friends.

Hardly Facebook's fault. The affected users are just naive and/or plain stupid.

haha, this reminds us of the unthink.com moves to be an anti-facebook social network yet are they able to defend against such bots ?

A lot of folks think Facebook is a contest where they are supposed to get the most amount of friends as some kind of bragging rights when adding random strangers just adds to your problems. Do you think posting you are on vacation is cool? I heard from a local person that 2 Navy sailors posted that they were out of the country and a U-Haul truck backed up to their condo, opened up the garage and took all the sailor's stuff (US Navy sailors have tons of electronics) so when they came home, all the neighbors thought they moved out as most Navy sailors do

Indeed it does....... Welcome to the site

Its not Facebook's fault, its the users for accepting people they don't know. - Ashton

Exactly. Just don't accept people you don't know and don't click on those 'watch what her dad did to her...' videos.

Really? The only way to avoid it is to have a Facebook account without a single friend.

Moral of the story, don't accept friend requests from people you don't know...

Posted by fshagan, 11-08-2011, 11:51 AM
How exactly does that help? If a Friend of a Friend of a Friend of a Friend accepted a bot Friend, so have you. If you are concerned about privacy, don't use Facebook.

In any case, the moral of the story is DON'T PUT PRIVATE INFO ON A SERVER THE WHOLE WORLD CAN CONNECT TO!!! If you had $10,000 in the most secure safe in the world, you still wouldn't chain it to a fence post outside....

In other words, lie. Don't put in your real name, email address, date of birth or sex. Even though Facebook requires these things. Facebook may connect you to your friends, but Facebook is not your friend. There are few companies I would classify as completely amoral, but Facebook is certainly one that has demonstrated it values its customers the least.

Your name and email address are one thing. Phone numbers, residential address, photos you wouldn't like your boss to see and stuff like that is something else entirely. Anything that could help somebody access your money, possessions or affect your credit shouldn't go on a FB account. If they're really your friends, they wouldn't need to go on Facebook to get that. That being said, given the nature of Facebook, they really should try to keep their site safe. Especially since businesses are starting to use the site.

If you haven't used Facebook you do have some control over what is shared with whom. For example, your phone number or likes only with friends or a status update or comment with friends of friends. They have improved a bit on their privacy recently, making it more granular. Ultimately though yes it is just a giant honeypot for marketers and surveillance.

600,000 facebooks account hacked or attemplted to be hacked every 24 hours. No a good thing to be the leader in a space. Dangerous site.
