Hostgator problem - can't send emails to hotmail accounts - anyone had this before?

Posted by purbeast, 03-17-2006, 04:58 PM
I cannot send from my hostgator account to hotmail or msn accounts. They were quick w/ticket responses when I thought it was just my email, but once I narrowed it down to the hotmail and msn domains, they are kinda slow to get back to me. They told me they think its a routing problem between bugatti and hotmail but I would like to have an update so I can know when I can get my site up. I don't want to launch it knowing that some huge email domains don't work yet. Anyone else had this problem? EDIT: also, I can RECEIVE emails just fine from hotmail and msn accounts, I just cannot send them TO those accounts.

What is the error message? Possibly the server mail IP is blocked for spamming or some other type of abuse?

Sounds like a DNS issue on HG's end, I would open a ticket and wait for them to fix it should be a easy fix. Have you checked your sites to make sure they are all loading and named is not down?

I have an open ticket with them, and the last response I got was at 12:30pm EST today. THey said it was a routing issue between bugatti and hotmail and they would let me know whats going on. I was hoping to get an update atleast after I responded to it telling them I want to know whats going on. I just have 1 reseller site right now, and 1 test account I "sold" to myself. they are both working perfectly, however the account creation and DNS emails were never received on my end because i created with a hotmail account. That is what made me realize something was not working correctly w/the email. I just want this fixed asap because my website is done %99 but I can't put it online w/this problem being known to me

Good thing you caught this before implementation. I had a reseller act w/HG and found them to be really helpful and knowledgeable. I never made an attempt to resell so I cancelled.

Yah well my whole site is actually already implemented and up and running, I Just haven't linked it to the domain just yet. But yes it's a good thing I caught this before I had it opened to the public, thats for sure

I'd say go through few weeks of testing before opening to public or even hosting a friend or two for free to test things out and if you need help I'm sure giving them a call will solve things faster than contacting them via helpdesk, good luck.

I've seen this happen before. I was told that it is due to going over a threshold of x number of messages per hour to the same domain, but it's happened on single messages so I don't think that's it. More likely they are tweaking Exim again and one of the config files got messed up.

I was able to look up the ticket and see it was resolved days ago when he opened this thread. I believe it was from hotmail blocking the server or domain temporary.
