I believe they simply offer a PayPal account, which is free in any case.

I did not know that. Maybe we'll start offering "free merchant accounts" as well

Unfortunately, there are no true "free" merchant accounts, and they're a marketing ploy at best.

Its just a paypal account, you can get a 2checkout account for a one time fee of $49

May be you can give a try searching deeper on the offers board for the free merchant account.

I don't think any host really offers free merchant accounts or else you pay for it with your monthly billings its just basicly included.

A (real) merchant account is not cheap so I also doubt you're going to find that anywhere at all, indeed. You might be able to find some 3rd party processors but not a real merchant though, I highly doubt that.

They do disclose that it's PayPal, so they're not trying to hide it. Although IMO, it's a stretch calling PayPal a "merchant account".

I do know that some clients offer Clientexce which is also similar. However, I do know that Xeserve offres something called Host Admin, I am asumming that is something similar Cheers,

That's not similar really. Clientexec is a billing system, which is not free. So if a company provides that for free, it is an actual benefit to the customer.

Merchant Accounts are rather cheap, and free to setup in most cases if you shop them around. The key is the monthly fees, 99% charge a monthly statement fee, than per transacation fee, and transacation discount rates. 2co is same concept, per trasnacation fee and discount rate. Now in all reality PayPal does now have a new Virtual Terminal which is a true merchant account in many ways.

That's sneaky Next time we update our site I'm going to make sure free merchant account is added I'll give a direct link to paypal upon account creation. I wonder if anyone has been surprised when they order and find out the merchant account is just paypal.

That is how I know, never hurts to check up on the competition . In all reality, I agree that it is sneaky.

Wow, I didn't think you were serious at first. That's one hell of a marketing ploy.

There is so much fraud on webhosting orders that you could find yourself losing a merchant account from too many chargebacks. Using Paypal does cut down on the chargebacks. Cash eliminates it!

what exactly is the "transaction discount rate"?? thanks

Some pages that contain definitions for the term "discount rate" in relation to merchant acounts: http://www.infomerchant.net/creditca...countrate.html http://www.findmyhosting.com/web-res...t-merchant.htm http://www.merchantseek.com/merchant_accounts_rates.htm

I believe that when one is looking for a host he askes around. When you see somebody is giving you something that has a particular value aren't you asking more questions about that? If you order and THEN you find out it was paypal that means that you did not research at all. Spend 5 minutes on hostgator's site and you will see it is a paypal account. They are not trying to hide anything... and I am sure the 24 hours support will tell you that if you ask.
