Need a reseller with regular backups

Posted by davlun, 09-08-2005, 02:51 AM
Hello, We have a number of sites that we host, most small php sites with a couple of mysql databases. However we recently had an issue with their disaster recover plan, ie they did not really seem to have one, when our server crashed along with the raid 10 disk array. So now i am trying to find a good reseller that takes daily full backups and ideally incrementals. Any suggestions? Thanks, David

Hi David, Welcome to the forum. The best bet would be to list your disk space / data transfer requirements along with a budget you are looking at and any features you may need. Off the top of my head, you can check out www.budgetreseller.com as they are have low cost, multi-domain plans that might work for you. I am familiar with the owner (Greg) who is a Community Liason here and I'd be surprised if he can't help you out with what you need. Either by offering you a package with them, or by pointing you in a better direction.

I have one incident where I wanted to recover a data 2 days ago from my hoster. I just launch a ticket and I get it in 1 hours time , on my home directory. HostingZoom, my recommendation for great service and uptime. Joshua

A word of warning... There have been reputable, well known, well established hosting companies, known to this forum who have stressed the reliability of their backup provision, who have gone on to let their customers down in the event of harware faults. In simple terms, the backups they promised they were making were of no use whatsoever when it came to the crunch. If your site is really that important to you, don't rely on your hosting company, get it sorted yourself. Most well known control panels make site backups easy and the one I'm most familiar with (Direct Admin) can even schedule these for you so you don't have to remember. Buy some storage space elsewhere and FTP you backups off-site. Companies such as bqinternet.com and gnax.net will set you up with some backup space for a few dollars a month. That way, you've got the double insurance of the backups your hosting company promises they are making and the ones you know yourself you are doing. Anything less and you could end up badly let down.

Most hosts take daily backups, but I would email them to make sure they backup in a differen't datacenter. I have heard of many people that use a second harddrive for backups, but that really isn't the best solution.

I think most is an overstatement. I wouldn't call "backing up" to a second hard-drive a real disaster solution. On another note, with each passing day, more and more companies are offering exactly what you want David. However, even the well known, good reputation companies may lose your data. Finding a host that provides daily backup is a great idea, but as slowdive said, you should make your own backup every once in a while.

Since most hosting companies basically make it the customer's responsability to keep backups as their own are not guaranteed to be available (check the their terms of service), one should make backups as often as he feels there is a need to. If you cannot afford to lose one day worth of data, then you must make your own daily backups. Last edited by ldcdc; 09-08-2005 at 12:02 PM.

We recommend Site5. They get backup daily and weekly.

davlun- Let me guess...You've been on HostForWeb.com's Amsterdam server? They just lost a ton of my data...And nobody over there seems to understand what the word 'backup' is supposed to mean. It certainly doesn't mean a mirror hard drive that dies as soon as the live one goes south. Anyhow, I'm guessing you were on their reseller plan like me, so if you find somebody that seems reputable that charges somewhere in the same neighborhood hostforweb.com does, let me know. I was paying $35.00 per month, 10GB of space, 200GB of bandwidth (I don't use much of it though). (hostforweb.com/reseller.htm). I've definitely learned my lesson on doing my own backups, but I would still like my web host to do a tape backup or something once a week or so. Good luck, Jared

Hello All, Thanks for the wonderful feedback. I just finished rebuilding the last of the sites that were down with our old provider, and am now resuming the search for someone new. No, we were not with any of the companies mentioned so far, but did take a look at site5. They do not mention backups in certain, but I was hoping to rely more on hosting companies backups since manually taking 20 site backups a day would be time consuming. Any thoughts?

I did a quick search on the Site5 forums, and they do provide daily backup, check here.

Not sure about other control panels but anyone with CPanel/ WHM should have it configured to run Daily, Weekly and Monthly backups to at least a second drive and even to the DC's resources for an off server option However having said that when push comes to shove while every host would make every effort to restore a backup in the case of something going wrong it is more than likely their terms of service would say that if the sky fell in then it is ultimately the client's responsibilty to have backups which can be a lot easier said than done especially if it is a dynamic site such as a forum
