CPanel DNSonly

Posted by AppKoders, 04-15-2010, 03:39 PM
I would like to add another dns server and I was wondering if how much RAM is needed for a dnsonly installation on a VPS? Thanks

It totally depends on the number of zones. It requires a minimum amount of ram to run itself probably not more than 256mb and that would include a modest size number of zones.

I have run them on 128, but I'd say 256 is good. 512 on the high end.

I have a cPanel DNS server using only 66MB RAM (though the installer needs at least 256MB)

256MB is the minimum, though hardly ever DNS-only needs that much. I've ran it with 256MB and 512MB clustered with more than 20'000 zones and no problems.

Ok thanks everyone! Have you tried running apache on your dns servers?

Well, I have experienced running DNS hosting on server with 96 MB of RAM and have had reasonably good performance from it. Hope this helps.

I'm hosting about 1200 websites, and I have 2 dns only vpses, both have 256mb ram and they're working great

On 128MB ram you will find frequent service crash mostly during the cpanel updates, On 256 it would smooth sailing.
