Linux or Windows

Posted by Hostivo, 06-23-2004, 03:43 PM
Do you guys prefer Windows over Linux/Unix? Is so what are the main differences?

Posted by Lubby, 06-23-2004, 03:53 PM
Linux because it is easier to use, cheaper to have and more popular in today's markets.

I assume you mean as a server? If so Linux.

If you mean as a hosting platform, linux all the way. It will give you the most options if u decide to install scripts on your server. Very often, scripts are not supported on windows. Only use windows if u have requirements that leave u no choice. For instance, if you are developing with ASP, MS Access, SQL Server, etc., u may need windows. Mulder

You forgot Both as an option, I can't vote because of that.

Posted by TechRanker, 06-23-2004, 04:53 PM
Agreed. I'd like to have both myself...

Hello kidclark02, Both have pros and cons. With Windows you CAN offer, PHP, ASP, ASP.net, perl/cGI, SQL Server, MySQL etc... (more bells and whistles and less stable) with Linux you CAN NOT offer ASP, ASP.net and SQL Server. (less features but more stability) Companies develop more on windows simply because their is more financial reward in it. Some advantage that I saw until some time back was that Linux was free. Well thats not true any more. redHat is charging a hell of a lot of money for their ES AS .... versions. I am not sure about other providers who offer both platforms here but in our case I would say Windows is clearly No. 1. WINDOWS SELLS and thats all we know. Mostly small and medium business owners who comprise our target market prefer Windows because that is all they know. Thank you . With best regards, Last edited by mediopia; 06-23-2004 at 09:24 PM.

Windows because I know asp, asp.net only

Posted by Hostivo, 06-23-2004, 09:43 PM
Yes I did, sorry.

Posted by Hostivo, 06-23-2004, 09:46 PM
That does seem about right. Thanks for your advice. I think I will go with both as dedicated servers. That way I can have both.

The only disadvantage, as a host, in Linux is that many customers are brainwashed by Microsoft and want Windows, as they use ASP. Linux runs, usually, "apache-ASP" (code is somewhat different). But that's really a very minor problem, and only applies for people who want to transfer sites from a Windows server to Linux (with ASP code). Otherwise, Linux is much more fun, and better to work with, and the philosophy of it is just right!

Choosing a plateform is depend on developement languages. Also most of people prefer Linux due to cheaper option.

Linux CAN offer ASP. You only need ChilisoftASP (quite a piece of software). There are also other methods on providing SQL Server with Linux server which is set up your own dedicated SQL Server for your client. This is not expensive if you can charge (and with the service you're offering, you CAN charge) premium price to your client.

I Love Microsoft in the concern I love Windows the best easiest operating system in the World. Linux - Its Free, but a lot of confusion, a lot of opensource itches and hitches. You can not survive always with an opensource, unless you are genius !!! Give a try with Windows2003 and IIS6.0. Everything can be secured, You can offer a lot that Linux offers you in windows. But You can not offer them in Linux. !!! Got That ! Anything Further !!

secure and windows???? every week there is a new security update for microsoft operating systems! its been ages since the release of xp and 200 but its still not secure enough!

Somewhere I read that Windows 2003 server is up to 70% faster for accessing files than Linux....I was surprised, knowing that everyone loves Linux more. Although, I'm in ASP technology so I'd say Windows N_F_S

Sorry, I would never trust my servers to the vole. Linux all the way. No, windows is not as secure as *nix and probably never will be (judging by what ive heard of longhorn from developers at the vole). So I cant run SQL Server....oh man that just ruined my day. Im over it. Win == Slow, insecure, unstable. *nix == Fast, secure, reliable, more powerful (god mode++) Besides, how can you go wrong with a 5 minute minimal install of fedora?

Posted by mediopia, 06-26-2004, 12:31 AM
Hello Marque, ... you CAN, with the 6 month release cycle! I can not imagine putting some thing like fedora on a server in production environment. That is why you have RedHat AS ES etc ... with > 2 years of release cycles. I do not hold any thing against linux. I love it and it is great! I just feel that you can not compare it with Windows just like that. Regards, Last edited by mediopia; 06-26-2004 at 12:35 AM.

Give it a try in Windows2003 with IIS6.0. Its more secured than the previous ones.

Linux has less viruses, is infinately more stable, more secure, and in general, faster and that's what the internet was built on. Alot of people think they want windows, but when they realize the benefits of Unix/Linux, which it's not hard to show, they would rather go with *nix. Not hard to convince them unless they already have something that is coded for windows. It happens. As to what version of *nix, I prefer FreeBSD, is more stable and more secure. I used (started out on) Red Hat back in the mid to late 90's and then moved to slakware and then to FreeBSD.. I have to say FreeBSD ROCKS!!! I would start off with a *nix box and then a windows box... My .02

Thank you for you advice. Thank you all. I am still deciding which version of Linux I should get and what version on windows I should get. Which versions work best for you guys?
