New to reseller hosting - need advice

Posted by mbgrafix, 02-14-2004, 01:21 AM
I have been a web designer for years... I now want to offer hosting to my clients as well, but I am completely green to hosting. I am looking for an easy to use reselling program that supports FrontPage. They need to have excellent support because I will probably need lots of help at first while I get myself going. I also want a plan that does not sell me by each customer I have. So far I have only spoken to a couple of companies, one of which is hivelocity.net. I liked what the salesman had to say, but that's their job. Anyway...any advice? Also, any suggestions of articles online that I can read which might offer me teaching on the ins and outs of hosting...novice friendly preferably! Thanks much!

yes, you can go with a reseller account. Most Linux server supports Frontpage Extension as well. But before asking, you should have your requirements: platform, space, bandwidth... so we can see if we can suggess you to do something basically, with a reseller account, you can create accounts for your clients, and you are supporting them, so they dont have to find another company for hosting. It's really good again, let's us know your requirements, or you may want to check out offers box here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumd...p?s=&forumid=4

But before asking, you should have your requirements: >platform, space, bandwidth... so we can see if we can suggess >you to do something Well, as a designer only, I never had to pay attention to issues like bandwidth and server space etc., so I must honestly admit that I do not know enough to even say for sure what I need. I posted in here because I figured people in the know who were once in my position and still remember that time when they knew nothing and can therefore understand my situation would be able to point me in the right direction. I can tell you this about my clients... generally I design websites for churches and small businesses. For the most part these are informational type sites, an "online brochure". I have not had any clients needing e-com sites (shopping cart) or asp sites so I do not have any experience yet with those, but I would want that option open if a client wanted it. I am a quick learner and taught myself graphic design and web design and I am confident that I will catch on pretty quickly once I have had a bit of time with this, but for now I am basically clueless. By the way, anyone have anything to say about hivelocity.net?

ok, do you have many clients need websites? we have a customer in UK. They are design firm as well. And they have started with our reseller RC110 package (1GB space + 20GB bandwidth). When they have more clients need website, they will upgrade later. Just give you an idea with your information above, I am sure that Linux is a good platform for you. Just looking for some offers in offers box regarding hivelocity.net: I havent used their service, so cannot say anything about them. sorry Last edited by gate2vn; 02-14-2004 at 01:15 PM.

You won't need much at all starting out. Chances are, those business's you will be hosting won't use hardly any bandwidth. Most people don't realize how much traffic it actually takes to use 1gb per day. I see so many people that want to start off with 600GB and 8GB storage plans. Nice thing about a reseller account, you can easily upgrade as you go. Start small and grow. Much easier on the bank account as well. Sounds like you need good support, which is important no matter what your knowledge level. Get a reseller account that offers a control panel, such as Cpanel or Direct Admin. This makes it easy for you to perform administrative duties such as installing front page extensions, managing email, adding new domains, adding shopping cards, and much more. Best of luck whatever you decide.

I started the same way, by looking for a place to host my Web Design clients. I did lot of research. A reseller account works perfectly. Start Small. You can always upgrade your account. I use Eurofficial and have had good luck with them. The offer a special 1/2 price deal to WebHostTalk forum members. Eurofficial Special 1/2 price

Take a look at http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk They use the ensim control panel. The reseller platform is easy for you to use. The client panel has been reskinned to be customer friendly. If you are a webdesigner and that is where you want to drive your income and not make a killing on hosting fees, check http://www.pair.com They have a different reseller model more suitable for designers like you. http://www.pair.com/resellers/faq.html#1 You get billed for their plan and your client pays you. But if they have troubles, the submit a support ticket directly to pair, not you, and the pair techs will take care of it. Last edited by intellec; 02-14-2004 at 09:05 PM.

That sounds a lot like resellerspanel.com... That's great if you want it on the side but if you want to be in total control then a good bulk reseller plan would work best for you.

I've used Eurofficial for about a year now and am very happy with them.

Yes, however, from what I've heard, Pair is a very reliable datacenter.
