https redirection weird issue

Posted by chamelion, 06-29-2008, 01:10 PM
hey guys, ok i've installed this shared SSL certificate on my server for a domain. now the weird thing is when i go to https://anydomain.onmyserver it redirects to the site which owns the SSL certificate. any idea how to either disable https access for everything else, or just now have it redirect to that site?

A SSL certificate only works for the EXACT (and I mean exact) URL you registered it for. Any other URL, even a subdomain, will not work with the SSL certificate. Since the subdomain is redirecting a site to different point, that point may be th DEFAULT redirect of the server or if the host has a shared SSL cert installed, the redirection of the shared SSL cert. You would need to contact your host to determine which this is and what could be done about that, as the answer is different per the host setup.

Any other domain that is sharing the same IP of the domain( where ssl is installed), when taken in browser using https, it will be redirected to the domain where SSL is installed. This happens because, when taking https, you are tying to connect to port 443 and only one site is configured on that port, ie the main site.

Question, if you are the host this is your domain correct? Do you have a shared SSL cert setup already. If not you might want to install this one as the shared one and you would pretty much solv eyour issue by default.

Is the IP used to setup SSL shared with any other domains in the server ?
