how can i format a second drive in the server so that nobody, not even a data recovery place, can recover it? thanks

david510: That page tells you how to format a drive but I think that frattay22 is more interested in making it so none of the (presumably sensitive) files on the disk could be recovered later by a persistent individual. frattay22: Right off the top I found a program called wipe which seems to address your concern. It can be found here: dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/wipe/ That being said I usually settle for the middle ground and just use dd to write zeroes to the whole partition or disk: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdX That should suffice to deter anyone who isn't planning to spend the time (and money) to take the drive apart and analyze the platters with some very expensive machinery.
