IP Addresses

Posted by mark81, 03-24-2013, 02:34 AM
I have an Australian reseller hosting and now have some customers wishing to obtain SSL certificates and as such need a dedicated IP. However my host is saying due to limited resources, dedicated IP's are not available. Without changing hosts, is there any way of purchasing IP addresses from an SSL company, or buying IP Addresses elsewhere?

I think it will be better to change hosting company, because there is some company who provide dedicated with SSL by cheap price or free. I know that it is possible to use IP address from another vpn company to your hosting server, but you have to root access of the server. this procedure also a complex. So think about changing hosting account.

No, you can't buy an ip address from SSL company. Better just move if they can't provide ip addresses to you.

There is limited ipv4 addresses so if your hosting company cant offer you what you need. Then its time to find a host you can obtain ips from.

If your host won't supply IP addresses for SSL, definitely look for another host. Since SNI is not widely utilized on the hosting side at this time, SSL should be valid justification for an IP.

I personally see it as if my hosting provider (i.e put you in my steps) can not provide a dedicated ip to me then why stay with them what happens if in the future you need a extra 10GB of Hard Drive Space or bandwidth? Question is will they give that to you if you needed it prob not.. Anyways find a provider with more resources this way you can not be worried that your provider don't have this or that left on the server and you know you can ask for a dedicated ip when ever and get it. it just dose not seem right to stay with a company that can not give you something which they should be able to .

In this instance, you are much better off just moving your site to another provider that you can get hosting from. If you are interested, there are quite a few people at LowEndBox.com and LowEndTalk.com that can sell you a managed VPS (virtual private server) with a dedicated IP and the service that can set it up and maintain it for you. Maybe even in the managed hosting section of WHT you might find some good providers. Or, you could use this as an opportunity to learn to do it yourself. Make sure you ask lots of questions when you have them, its the best way to learn.

Agreed, although the IPv4 pool is nearly depleted, most hosts will not deny requests if a valid reason is provided (SSL would be one). This would imply that your host may be a reseller as well. As DWS2006 implied, SNI is an option in some cases, but it does not work well across all browsers/operating systems, it is not worth the trouble.

SNI may be an option?

I would not use SNI as not all operating systems and browsers have full support for it, the setup process on most control panels makes this a royal pain to setup as well.

Available IPs are decreasing, but some hosting companies, by adhering to ARIN rules of documentation, are still receiving new allocations of v4 IPs. These companies also may retrieve many IPs through client cancellation. You can find them if you look.
