Reseller hosting - SSL important

Posted by architxt, 10-18-2011, 02:03 AM
Hi, I'm looking for a reseller account where I can offer entry level packages for business wanting to host their websites as well as Facebook Pages. The latter require SSL certificates for each separate domain / account, so it would be great if I could offer a package that includes hosting as well as an SSL certificate. Ideally this reseller account would... Allow me to start small - I would be migrating over about 5 clientsRun Textpattern CMS (PHP 4.4.1+ or 5.0.2+, in mod_php or fastcgi mode, MySQL 4.1.7+, HP extensions: mbstring, Zlib, pache 1.3+ or 2.0+ with mod_rewrite, A Unix server OS with locale support)Allow individual accounts to scale up from a basic offer (eg. 500MB disk space / 10 GB bandwidth)Allow IP/SSL for each account / domain (including the option of cheap third-party certificate)Offer customer support directly to my client for technical stuffOffer tools for account management and billingOffer options for hosting in Australia and the USOffer a domain name registration option (offering .com.au, if possible) I don't particularly need to perceived as a hosting provider so I don't need my own name servers and all that (at least to start with). In fact, it would be good to associate my business with a reputable hosting provider. Cheers, Lawrence

It looks like you need a cpanel reseller plan with end user support, billing script, domain reseller account. Any providers should be able to provide dedicated ip & ssl certificate as addons. For .com.au domains you would need to go with a local domain provider, maybe register on behalf of your customers. Popular domain reseller platform Enom or Resellerclub does not support .com.au domain.

With a reseller account, I do not think you would be given the option to host in two different locations since you would be located on one server in a certain datacenter. What you may have to do is open two reseller accounts on different servers, in different datacenters to achieve this

What is your budget? Also how much diskspace/bandwidth do you require?

PremiumHost, thanks for the advice. Given I won't be dealing with that many clients end user support may not be necessary (just as long as I set expectations clearly). cpoalmighty, good point. Perhaps I can leverage a service as offered by CloudFlare if a certain client markets globally. CrocWeb, I'm thinking of offering an entry level package of 1GB disk space and 10GB bandwidth for about USD25/month. I've got a number of websites that I will not charge for too (including my own). I don't want to spend over USD500 per year for this.

Totally agree. You can set up a contact email and provide support to your customers. Any technical issues you don't know just forward to your host to get an accurate answer. That way you learn more about hosting and understand what your cutomers need. A reseller package is usually around $20-30/month. My advice is pay monthly, do not go with yearly plan immediately when signing up.

Your on the right track to getting started! Do you have any current hosts in mind?

PremiumHost, in another discussion a user suggested that I get end-user support as I may well need it in the future. Makes sense to future-proof myself. @TBradley, I've looked at a few and are now considering the pros and cons of hosting in the US as opposed to Australia. The former offers many more options and more value but the latter would guarantee better performance (which is quite significant). But using a CDN service such as CloudFare may be an option. Where are you located?

Melbourne, Australia. When I FTP to my MediaTemple account vs a local based hostin provider, file transfer is considerably slower. I'm not too concerned about FTP as much as page loading times, particularly pages served (via iFrames) in Facebook.
