Problem with setting CentOS 6.3 64bit edition with Raid 10

Posted by prashant1979, 10-04-2012, 07:21 AM
We have bought a new server with Intel S5500BC-R motherboard and want to set up Raid 10 and then install CentOS 6.3 64bit edition in it. We configured Raid 10 from the Bios and then tried to install CentOS in it. However, we get the following error disks sda, sdb, sdc, sdd contain bios raid metadata, but are not part of any recognized bios raid sets. Is there any wrong setting we have done or there is some issue with CentOS 6.3 64bit with Bios based Raid 10?

Hello, Check this for your query: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/ce...er/121542.html http://shirker.blog.com/2011/08/06/d...tall-centos-6/

I tried the option given in http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/ce...er/121542.html However, it does not work and CentOS has issues with Software raid. It does not boot at all after installation. I haven't tried the option given in the second URL. Will try it once.

Hi, You can try to remove the RAID metadata from the disks and use software RAID instead. You can use 'dmraid' tool for this purpose, boot into rescue mode and run: I'm not sure if brace expansion works in this case. You can also use 'dd' but this will take much longer, especially with four disks. Regards

The software raid does not work since there is some issue with running CentOS on software raid which causes the operating system to not boot at all.

I mean system software RAID not the one you configured from the BIOS. http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/De...id-config.html

I am also not talking about the Bios here. I setup software raid during software installation and it does not boot at all after installing it. For better understanding, I followed the steps given here

The grub installer on centos 6 works like ****, and causes issues like this where a fresh install is unbootable, one of several reasons I still prefer centos 5.

have you tried selecting the 'specialized storage' option in the beginning of anaconda? If you're hostraid chipset is supported by the kernel it will recognize the RAID array from the bios (just make sure you build the array first before the install) in the 'specialized storage' anaconda should also create non RAID partition for /boot and install grub in this non raided partition (true whether its hostRAID or softRAID)

We need the OS to be on Raid too. We tried the installation in 'specialized storage' itself, but we don't see any drives. I am attaching a screenshot of what we see. Can the issue be resolved by using an external raid controller? Attached Thumbnails
