Hi, We want to start Linux based mail server. But the security is important. Can you advise me about what are the some basic security steps ? And which would be the securest free/cheap webmail software ? Such as Zimbra, squirrelmail, horde, roundcube, or any other ? Regards.

Hi, Horde I would say is the best of the 4.. But if you are looking for security, then you will have to buy a mail server system. Thanks. Hamza

I would recommend you to use Exim as mail server software for your mail server. Some of the security considerations are discussed in below URL for Exim: http://www.exim.org/exim-html-3.20/d...l/spec_55.html If you want to provide a lightweight, speedy, resources sufficient client then go with RoundCube. But, if you want to offer a high-end service, GMail like then go with Horde.

Thanks, Can you recommend any hosted solutin ? For example who will take care of full security, we will just sell. But also have full right for theme modification. Racskpace costs are fine, but almost no theme modification. (except logo) We need a price which will be 1.5$- 2$ per mail box. Have you heard of Zimbra ? How well is it ? Regards

I have heard about Zimbra but never used it. Why do not you go with cPanel/WHM based server. It will by default give you Exim mail agent and also web mail options like Horde, Roudcube etc. If you do not have enough budget at starting face then you can purchase managed VPS with cPanel/WHM installed. A control panel like cPanel will help you more to configure your email services.

I have both dedicated and virtual servers. also initial security hardening was done. But dont know as a mail server it is secure enough or not.

OK fine. Can you please provide some details about what kind of initial security hardening you have already done on your server, so that I can provide you more suggestions.

Thanks you are very kind, You know those standart things that Server management companies do. 1. Php hardening, 2. Modsec 3. Suhosin 4. tmp var/tmp dev/shm hardening. 5. DNS security 6. apache hardening 7. CSF + SSH hardening. But when they were hardening the server, they also took into consideration that this server will be used both webserver and mail server. So i think if we do it only mail server, by disabling unneeded features,(which are used for webservers) we can gain more security. We can set very agressive and high level security configuration. If one account is hacked, it is not problem, but from that account hackers should not be able to gain access to the root server and read all mails and importand private details of other users.

Yes, http://www.deeproot.in/deepofix seems good for me. Please have a look. The things you have mentioned are mostly related to web server security. I would like to add following specially for mail server: 1. The ClamAV anti-virus: It ensures virus free mailboxes for users. The anti-virus signature updates are automated. 2. SpamAssassin The SpamAssassin-based anti-spam system ensures that you can control incoming spam.

Postfix + Roundcube. This combination hasn't let us down for years.

Maybe NetEarthOne is suitable for you? NEO sell email account and provide theme modification. -- Note: I am not 100% confirm about theme modification.
