need help with debian server

Posted by rankris, 08-28-2012, 05:05 AM
I have a debian dedicated server with mysql apache with around 20 websites. I do not use a control panel yet. What will be the easiest and less downtime method to install a control panel( suggestions please) without breaking the current configuration. I dont have a CP preference but just need to easily manage sites.

Do you need management for end users or just for yourself? If it's just for you and you are just trying to make life a little easier, something like webmin should work fine, and with little modification out of the box. If you need something for the end users, then you probably want something a bit more user friendly. Most CP solutions are not going to be a simple drop in on top of your existing config. You'll likely need to migrate your sites to one, since they store things in different places, and use customized configurations. You'll find that it's not really a simple task to do this on an existing system. It's usually easier to just setup a new server with the CP and migrate the existing domains into the CP.

If you will try to install control panel on the same dedicated server then it may corrupt your existing settings of MySQL and Apache service. It is because the control panel will itself try to install these services and conflict with your existing settings. As serve-you told you can set up control panel on other server and then transfer accounts manually to new server.

Hi, Why don't you go with Plesk panel, i here their support and forums are real good and supportive. For free installation :- wget -O - http://autoinstall.plesk.com/one-click-installer | sh You can get free 30 days keys in there panel.

Please DO NOT run this on your existing server. See prior comments. This will break your existing sites.

Since everything is already setup and running, you should consider running it without a control panel. It will keep the server cleaner, and you will have more intimate knowledge of how the system and debian works.

Agreed... But if you are planning to install a panel on your server over to existing data, Admin should be so smart enough to keep the backup of the data first before deploying anything on server

If you want to install control panel then all things will be changed. It would be great you can take backup of your all sites as well as database its very helpful for futures.

I would recommend CPanel. But cpanel is something you would want to install at the time you install the OS. I believe CPanel only works with linux systems as well. But it is a great utility. You would have to reinstall your system to use it but you can always move your data over.

Webmin is one of the few admin panels that will not mess with your current Debian configuration.

Hi, You'll need license for both panels :- cPanel 1 - 4 Licenses --> $38 / month Parallel's plesk Unlimited Domains for Linux --> $39.99/month Which one you'll prefer ?

Cpanel doesn't support Debian. Better to take a few backups before installing Plesk. Plesk should work.
