private DNS not functioning

Posted by privatne, 04-21-2006, 05:25 PM
hello, i just got a reseller acocunt and wanted my provider to give me private dns. they did not work, i asked my registrar, for him did not work either, the dns are not registered. my provider refuses to accept any failure from his side. who is wrong please?

you need both. - host provides you IPs for private dns, and configures their system - you will need to register private name servers in your domain control panel most of the cases, private dns for reseller, and domain are not problem. where do you register your domain? have you checked with your host about private dns before ordering?

Some registrars have problems with what they consider Foreign Nameserver IPs and you may need to contact them and let them know what you are trying to do. Not sure if this helps, but its a tidbit that may help you along the way.

As others have pointed out, you need to make particular your host has setup these nameservers on their end. If they are not properly setup, then they will not work when you attempt to set them up with your registrar. However, if they have given you the nameservers and associated IP addresses and they still do not work, then it is either i. They gave you incorrect information. Or, ii. There is something wrong with your registrar and you need to contact them. Either way, you should have your host double check the information and make sure you are using the exact information they give you to set up your nameservers with your registrar. Good luck.

The first thing that needs to be done is the provider needs to set them up on their side. Otherwise, you or the registrar wont be able to add a host summary. So if you go to the registrar and login and try to add the host summary and it fails. In other words gives you an error, then the dns zone is not setup or not setup correctly. However, if it goes through and still not working then contact your registrar. Easy as pie.

thank you all for very quick replies. my provider said: Well it's strange that the DNS would work for every other customer and not you! As I offered in our support system if you give us your login details we will set it up for you. and here is the correspondence with my registrar: Response (Joe R.)04/21/2006 06:54 AM Dear customer, I tried to ping the nameservers and did not receive a result. It is also not registered with Verisign as per the link that I sent you previously. Customer 04/21/2006 01:57 AM My hosting provider told me, that these DNS are set up on their server. So what is the problem? Response (Joe R.)04/20/2006 02:05 PM Dear customer, ns1.MYDOMAIN.biz is not a valid nameserver. You will need to contact your current hosting provider to ensure that it is correct. I have provided a link that will show you that it is not a valid registered nameserver at the national reigistry with Verisign... http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/cgi-bin/whois?whois_nic=ns1.MYDOMAIN.biz&x=26&y=9&type=nameserver Customer04/20/2006 10:42 AM Hello, it did not work: I got the message "Unable to update nameservers: Nameserver [ns1.MYDOMAIN.biz] doesn't exist at the registry " and "Unable to update nameservers: Nameserver [65.98.11.XX] doesn't exist at the registry " Please help. ***

ok, firstly, make sure you have done to register ns1 and ns2 in domain control panel, with the IPs provided by your hosting provider? Secondly, as a reseller, you can edit your hosting dns usually. which control panel do you have? It can help to show you how to check ns1, ns2

i could not finish the registration of ns in domain panel, because got the error messages described above. i have WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.8.1-R113 .

It seems you havent registered private DNS. You will need to register private DNS before updating them for your domains. in you WHM, can you see the DNS section in left menu?

who should normally register private DNS? i or my hosting provider? if provider, i am afraid after this experience î will look for another one... i must first log in my cpanel, and from there log again in my WHM. is it correct? yes, i can see "DNS Functions" Last edited by privatne; 04-22-2006 at 09:14 AM.

as said above, you DO need to do both in domain control panel and WHM. And how to register private DNS in domain control panel? Ask your registrar, cause each registrar has its own GUI

The only thing you need to setup is the host summary with your registrar. Your host needs to setup the nameservers and give you the corresponding information, ie ns1.yourdomain.com = 123.34.56.78 ns2.yourdomain.com = 123.35.56.79 When you setup this information with your registrar, you need to make sure the information you are giving the registrar's system is the exact same as the information the host gave you. So if they gave you ns1.yourdomain.com and you put dns1.yourdomain.com, then you are going to have a problem. Good luck. [edit] by the way, I'm not sure what gate2vn is saying when he says you need to set them up within the cpanel and whm. You never setup private DNS through the user-end of cpanel, and you only set them up within WHM, if you are the host and not the reseller. [/edit] Last edited by StackHost; 04-22-2006 at 10:57 AM.

The problem is that you are trying to update the nameservers rather than create child nameservers. Basically, the "doesn't exist" message is because you are telling it to point your domains to nameservers that you have never setup yet. Contact your registrar and ask them how to create child nameservers on your domain and then follow the directions they provide. Once the nameservers are created, then you can alter your domain to point to them.
